I realized last night that my kids don't know me. They know I'm their mom. They know I take care of them, but they don't know that I'm a person. We had family home evening last night. I had to work all day, so I had Nina choose a topic from my family home evening packets and get it all planned. Since it was Mother's Day on Sunday, she chose the topic of "Mothers". We had our scripture, lesson, story, etc. and everything was all fine and dandy, and then we did the activity. For our activity Nina had a bunch of strips of paper that had things on them like: Name ____ things Mom _____. And then they had a die. Everyone took turns rolling the die and picking a strip of paper. I got to watch and tell them if they were right. Here are some of the answers... Name 2 things Mom does well: "cooking and laundry" Name 4 animals Mom likes: "Does Mom even like animals?" Name 1 thing Mom likes to do during the summer: "take care of us" Name 3 books Mom has read: "The Book of Mormon, that Holy Ghost book I saw on her bedroom door and ???" It was hilarious... answer after answer proved to me that my kids don't really know me as a person. You should have seen the blank looks on their faces. They just know me as "Mom".
I've decided that for the next few weeks during our family home evening opening exercises we will have a "family member of the week". The have to do a presentation on themselves with a poster and everything... just like the student of the week at school. We'll find out all about each other... favorite color, food, tv show, etc. I thought it's a good way for us to all get to know each other just a little better.
